The production of Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” in its last week at Portland Stage Company, is as dynamic and spellbinding as its subjects. In my four decades of attending PSC plays, I’ve added this to my list of top performances that include such standouts as “‘Master Harold’ … and the Boys,” “I Am My Own Wife,” and “Night Mother.”

Having seen and known the play, I was reluctant to put myself through the emotional wringer again. The life force of an all-Black cast drew my interest. I was rewarded with acting at its finest. Under the direction of Goldie Patrick, the energized and engaging performances by Thursday Farrar, Ashley C. Turner, Portland Thomas and Samuel B. Jackson made the hours as fluid as the inebriants on stage who were central to the drama, with splashes of biting humor.

It saddens me that I’ve found no mention or review of this stellar offering anywhere but in Broadway News Maine.

Devotees of exceptional theater should grab tickets before this production closes on Sunday, June 1.
