Shawn Ross’ two-run single highlighted a three-run eighth inning as the Altoona Curve defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 7-5 in the teams’ series finale Sunday in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Portland (27-21) is five games behind first-place Binghamton in the Eastern League’s Northeast Division.
Down 5-4 entering the bottom of the eighth, the Curve tied the game against Yovanny Cruz (0-1, 4.22 ERA) when Brenden Dixon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Ross’ single gave the hosts the lead.
The Sea Dogs’ Zach Ehrhard hit his first two home runs of the season and Mark Kolozsvary added a blast as Portland took a 4-0 lead through 5 1/2 innings. Altoona scored in the sixth and seventh innings, highlighted by Termarr Johnson’s two-run homer in the seventh, to make it 4-4 before Portland took a 5-4 lead on Marvin Alcantara’s RBI groundout.
Altoona’s Wilkin Ramos (2-1, 1.80 ERA) allowed one hit over 1 2/3 innings to earn the win.
