AUBURN — Police shut down a section of Washington Street Tuesday afternoon as fire crews battled a blaze inside a mechanic’s garage.

At about 4:30 p.m., firefighters were called out to 544 Washington St., the former home of Automotive Dreams, for a report of flames inside the building.

The two-bay garage was described as “fully involved” by fire crews, who called for additional manpower from the Lewiston Fire Department.

A short time later, at about 5 p.m., the flames were reported knocked down. Fire crews remained at the scene and called for assistance from the Office of State Fire Marshal as an investigation to the cause got underway.

Police were diverting northbound Washington Street traffic onto Miami Avenue while the firefighting effort was underway.
