DEAR SUN SPOTS: Mexico Congregational Church, UCC (the “Green Church”), at 163 Main St., will hold a Kickoff to Summer Sale on Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

An excellent selection of items will be offered for those heading to camp, with kitchen and household goods as well as books, puzzles and crafts for those inevitable rainy days.

Pictures, frames, wall decor, and decorative items will be displayed at reasonable prices, along with small appliances. The sale will be indoors in the dining room, where a bake sale will also be held outdoors under the tent on the front lawn.

This sale will mark the first event for the 2025 raffle item that will be drawn at the Christmas Fair on Nov. 1. The raffle is for a handcrafted wooden picture frame display board. The raffle tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. — Carol, Mexico

ANSWER: May you all have a great sale day with perfect weather, good friends, and lots of treasures being re-homed. So much work goes into these sales but it’s worth the effort. Let’s show our support by showing up!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I often read about scams targeting seniors here in your column and appreciate your help. I have a parent who has had close calls with scams a couple times now and I’m concerned about her ability to detect what’s legit and what isn’t. She spends quite a bit of time on her computer playing games, etc. where there are pop-ups and ads that lure her in. With the last incident, we had to have the bank help us and cancel her credit card.

She lives near us and although we check on her well-being often and have good communication, she doesn’t want us there all the time to “babysit her.” – No name, no town

ANSWER: I understand your concern, and also your mother wanting to preserve her independence. Keep the lines of communication open. Suggest that she run any online purchases by you. And remind her, if necessary that she should never, ever send money to someone she doesn’t know, or to any organization unless she has researched it and knows that it’s real.

Another idea is for her to have a separate credit card for online spending only that won’t give a scammer access to her bank accounts. People at her financial institution can help you with these decisions.

AARP has great resources that will keep your family members up to date with correct fraud schemes. Hopefully, your mom is a member but if not, it’s easy and inexpensive to sign up. The benefits are awesome and it’s a safe site to play games that your mom may enjoy, too. Go to https://www.aarp.org/.
