LEWISTON — A local woman was charged with driving while intoxicated and three counts of endangering the welfare of children late Tuesday night after police said she intentionally ran over two mailboxes while driving with a pair of young children in her SUV and another alone at home.

Amanda Hayes, 31, of Lewiston, was also charged with refusing to submit to arrest and aggravated criminal mischief after allegedly fighting with police and later allegedly breaking Intoxilyzer computer equipment at the jail.

At 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Deputy Lance Neal was in Lewiston when a passing motorist advised him that a driver in a blue Ford Explorer had just plowed over two mail boxes while pulling onto Main Street from Deer Road.

A short time later, the deputy caught up with Hayes as she sat in traffic at a construction site near 675 Main St., according to a court affidavit. The front end of the vehicle was gouged and a driver’s side mirror had been ripped off the vehicle, Neal wrote.

“Amanda stated that she had just left Deer Road where she had been for several hours,” according to the affidavit. “Amanda seemed to not know about the damage to her vehicle but later admitted to striking mailboxes intentionally because she was upset. Also in the vehicle were her two small children, who appeared to be around 4 years old. Amanda also stated that she had a 10-year-old at home alone.”

Neal administered a road sobriety test, during which Hayes lost her balance and exhibited other signs of intoxication, according to the affidavit.

“Amanda became more uncooperative as the investigation proceeded and she became even more agitated with the individuals she was attempting to talk to on the phone and with deputies present,” Neal wrote in his affidavit.

After Hayes was arrested, deputies struggled to get her into the back of a police cruiser, according to the court document.

“Amanda became physically aggressive and attempted to lunge at me,” Neal wrote. “While trying to get her into the cruiser, she began banging her head against the window of the cruiser door over and over.”

Later, at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn, Hayes refused to take an alcohol breath test, Neal wrote, and became further combative.

“While I was retrieving the refusal form to read to her, Amanda climbed onto the table that contained the Intoxilyzer and other items, laid on her back and began kicking at me,” Neal wrote.

When Hayes was pulled off the table, she dragged the Intoxilyzer equipment with her, police said, causing it too break. Hayes then refused to get up off the floor, Neal wrote, until she was removed by jail staff and taken away for booking.

Because Hayes was free on bail from previous unrelated charges at the time of her arrest, she was ordered held at the jail without bail.

Sheriff’s officials said Wednesday that the three children were staying with family members and the Department of Health and Human Services had been advised of the matter.
