New Gloucester Public Works Director Ted Shane finished up his 19 years of service to the town on Thursday, June 12.
In addition to New Gloucester, Shane has served in municipal governments across the Lakes Region and beyond for about 28 years. Prior to his job in New Gloucester, Shane worked in Sebago for six and a half years, and before that, he worked with the Maine Department of Transportation for two and a half years. He is also currently serving as the chair of the Naples Select Board, where his term expires in June 2026.
Following his retirement from New Gloucester, Shane plans to become Naples’ full-time animal control officer.
When asked about what his greatest accomplishments were, Shane said, “I can definitely say that I’m leaving the roads better than they (were).” He said that every piece of Public Works equipment had been replaced or undergone major upgrades under his watch.
Shane also cited the opening of the town’s Public Works facility at 611 Lewiston Road. The $4.6 million, 22,000-square-foot complex was originally opened in 2020, and was an upgrade from the previous site in New Gloucester’s Upper Village, where plow truck drivers had to remove plows from the vehicles to get inside.
