WOODSTOCK — Police on Monday found the driver of a GM pickup truck that they say struck and killed a motorcyclist and injured his passenger early Sunday evening on South Main Street and Route 232.

The diesel pickup truck and a group of motorcyclists were traveling south on South Main Street, also called Route 26, at the time of the incident. The gray truck was traveling in the far-right lane on Merrifield Hill when the lead motorcycle attempted to pass the truck in the passing lane, said Oxford County Sheriff’s Maj. Dana Thompson.

According to witnesses, the truck suddenly veered left into the same lane as the motorcycle. The motorcycle driver lost control, left the roadway and crashed into a wooded area.

The pickup truck did not stop and left the area, Thompson said.

Oxford County Sheriff deputies responded to the scene at 7:50 p.m. They discovered the motorcycle driver, a 60-year-old from Oxford, severely injured. He was transported to the hospital and subsequently died from his injuries, Thompson said.

An adult female passenger, a 50-year-old from Oxford, suffered significant injuries and is hospitalized. The names of the two victims have not been released.

The Woodstock Fire Department, Pace Ambulance and Bethel Rescue assisted at the scene.

The Oxford County and Androscoggin County crash reconstruction teams investigated. The truck had been seen traveling southbound on Route 26, Thompson said.

Investigators located surveillance video of the truck.

At about 8 p.m. Monday night, Thompson released a statement saying the driver of the truck had been identified but details would not be immediately released.

“The person of interest has been identified and the truck located. We are not prepared to release the driver’s identity or any information about the driver.  No charges or arrests have been made and it is likely that this investigation will take some time to complete,” the statement said.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office at 207-743-9554.
