Three people died in separate fires over the weekend in Newfield, Caribou and Wilton, according to the state fire marshal’s office.

The first fire broke out shortly after midnight Saturday on Magrath Road in Wilton, where one woman was rescued from a second-floor bedroom by firefighters and neighbors. A man, 84-year-old Robert Adams, was found outside, injured from an apparent jump from the window, according to Shannon Moss, spokesperson for Maine Department of Public Safety.

The woman, 81-year-old Sharon Rainey, had severe burns and was flown by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she died from her injuries. Rainey was the owner of Dutch Treat on Route 2 in Wilton.

Adams is in critical condition at Maine Medical Center, Moss said. A neighbor and Wilton police officers were treated at a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

A preliminary investigation suggests that a chimney might have been the cause of the fire, but the investigation is ongoing.

Late Saturday night, the Caribou Fire Department was called to a fire at 32 Hillcrest Ave., where they discovered the body of a deceased person inside.

The remains were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in August for identification and an examination. Officials believe the person is 49-year-old Tony Jackson, Moss said.

The cause of the Caribou fire is being investigated by the fire marshal’s office.

The third broke out early Sunday morning at 52 Maintenance Lane in Newfield and destroyed a two-story house.

Investigators believe the homeowner, 39-year-old Kristofer Whittemore, may have been inside the home at the time. Remains found inside the building were taken to the medical examiner to be identified.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of that fire.
