GORHAM — The North Yarmouth Academy and Buckfield softball teams played two innings of the Class D South softball final Tuesday night at the University of Southern Maine, but with a steady rain and more coming, those two innings were wiped off the books.

The game was stopped in the top of the third inning, with NYA holding a 3-1 lead, as the umpires deemed the pitching circle and home plate area unplayable due to the wet conditions. After a long delay to work on the field and discuss the situation with both coaches, the game was called. The entire game will be replayed in its entirety Wednesday, again at USM, at a time to be determined by the MPA and the schools involved.

By rule, the game must restart from the beginning. With his team holding a two-run lead, NYA coach Ricky Doyon was disappointed about the postponement.

“I was concerned (with the field conditions), but not to the point to stop a regional (championship) game,” Doyon said.

Buckfield coach Shawn Prokey said he felt the game shouldn’t have started at all.

“Then you don’t have a disgruntled coach over there,” he said, pointing to the NYA dugout, “or one over here. You’ve got to think of the safety of the kids.”

The Panthers scratched across three runs in the top of the first inning. Buckfield got a run back in the bottom of the inning.
