The Boston Red Sox demoted rookie Kristian Campbell on Thursday according to multiple reports, sending the player who signed an eight-year, $60 million contract earlier this season to Triple-A Worcester.

Campbell was named the American League Rookie of the Month for April after hitting .301. His production has fallen dramatically since. In 67 games this season, the 22-year-old Campbell is battling .223 with six home runs, 21 RBI and 24 runs scored. Since May 1, he is batting just .159 with 40 strikeouts.

Campbell spent much of the 2024 season with the Portland Sea Dogs, when he was named Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America and also was the Eastern League’s Most Valuable Player.

Campbell became the second member of the Sea Dogs named Eastern League MVP, after Kevin Millar won in 1997. Campbell was promoted to Portland on June 4, 2024. In 56 games, he hit .362 with 17 doubles, three triples, eight home runs and 35 RBI before his promotion to Worcester on Aug. 20. For the season, he batted .330 with 20 homers, 24 steals and a .997 OPS.
