I am a registered respiratory therapist and a registered nurse, living in Windham. Throughout my career, I have cared for countless patients who depend on Medicaid for essential treatments, medications and health care services. For many, these resources mean the difference between managing their conditions and struggling to survive. Access to affordable health care and clean air is critical to ensuring they can work, attend family events and lead fulfilling lives.
Unfortunately, in May, the House of Representatives passed legislation that makes devastating cuts to Medicaid. Thankfully, Rep. Chellie Pingree stood with patients and voted against these harmful changes.
These cuts aren’t just an attack on health care — they’re an economic disaster in the making. Stripping people of their coverage will force more uninsured patients into emergency rooms, increasing costs for hospitals and taxpayers. Medicaid ensures that people can afford preventive care, reducing avoidable hospital admissions and keeping our workforce healthy. Slashing it will lead to financial strain on hospitals, higher insurance premiums and a less productive economy.
I urge readers to take action. Call Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King and demand they protect Medicaid.
