And so, we continue day after day hearing that many other countries no longer see us as dependable allies, and hearing that many legislators are doing nothing of consequence but seemingly kowtowing to whatever the current administration seems to be dictating.

There is another Maine legislator, besides Sen. Margaret Chase Smith, who should be admired for what he did at a very important time in his own political history. Recall that President Richard Nixon was being evaluated by Congress for possible impeachment. Many politicians voiced reservations about following through on such a verdict, but our own Bangorian, William S. Cohen, a newly minted congressman, knew what he had to do to be true to himself and to the Constitution, despite what it could negatively mean for his own political future. Along with some few others, he voted in favor of impeachment.

I am reminding us of our own native statesman, because today there are too many in Congress seemingly following the party line. It is “explained” that the 2026 elections are coming up for many, so “rocking the boat” would not be politically correct for their own political security.

My plea is that all politicians should stand up an be counted for what they know is right and true. They should do this without delay, before it is too late for themselves and for the people of our country. If need be, remember Bill Cohen’s courage. I am sure he slept peacefully that night and many nights thereafter.
