LEWISTON — The city delayed the opening of the Kennedy Park pool until Wednesday due to the extreme heat Tuesday.

A post on social media said the city would push back opening day due to the projected air quality and heat index out of “an abundance of caution for visitor and staff safety.”

City spokeswoman Angelynne Amores said the city decided to keep the pool closed Tuesday following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines that warn against prolonged outdoor activity during dangerous heat conditions.

“Heat exposure, especially in direct sun and humid conditions, can quickly lead to health related illnesses especially for children and adults,” she said. “Lewiston Recreation staff are outdoors during their entire shift so we prioritized everyone’s health and safety.”

Amores said the city is also reminding the public that there is a cooling center at Redemption Hill Church at 45 Park St., from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The pool is scheduled to open at noon Wednesday.
