REGION — This summer, the High Peaks Alliance (HPA) is teaming up with the Trails for Rangeley Area Coalition (TRAC) to elevate the Scenic 7 Hiking Challenge—an initiative designed to lead hikers away from crowded, over-promoted trails and onto some of Maine’s most breathtaking, lesser-known paths.
While Maine’s High Peaks region is known for its iconic hikes, increased visitation in recent years has led to some trailheads and summits becoming crowded, making it harder to find the quiet, natural experiences many hikers seek. The Scenic 7 Hiking Challenge was created to offer a true Maine experience: wild beauty, tranquil moments, and the chance to immerse yourself in nature without the crowds.
The Scenic 7 Hiking Challenge includes four mountain summits and three scenic trails, each selected for their natural beauty and relative solitude. Participants who complete all seven hikes can register as Challenge Champions and receive a patch, sticker, and online recognition. Hikes vary in length and difficulty, offering something for both seasoned hikers and those new to the outdoors.
For a full list of the Scenic 7 hikes, trail maps, and tips for a safe adventure, download the free booklet from the High Peaks Alliance website or visit Maine Trail Finder to log your progress and earn a digital badge.
“These seven trails are a sampler of some less-visited but truly spectacular hiking terrain—some of the best of Western Maine,” says Doug Dunlap, local guidebook author and High Peaks Alliance board member.
This summer, HPA and TRAC invite you to join free, guided hikes on three Scenic 7 routes:
-
Tuesday, July 15: Poplar Falls Hut Hike
-
Friday, July 18: Forest Legacy Hike
-
Tuesday, July 22: Blueberry Mountain Hike
-
Friday, August 15: Appalachian Trail – Bemis Mt hike
-
Tuesday, Sept 16: Cranberry Pond/Peak hike
These hikes are free and open to everyone—no registration required. It’s the perfect way to explore new trails, connect with fellow outdoor enthusiasts, and get to know both HPA and TRAC.
