LEWISTON – Jonathan P. Elie, 72, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at the Hospice House in Auburn. He was born
in Lewiston on Dec. 8, 1952, a son of the late Leo R. and Evelyn E. (Smith) Elie.
After graduating from Lewiston schools, Jon worked in various trades, including swimming pool and fireplace installation, before beginning a long and fulfilling career at Lewiston Public Works in 1981. He took great pride in starting from the ground up – beginning as a garbage collector and rising through the ranks to become a foreman in the Highway Department. In 2007, he was promoted to Highway Operations Manager, a position he held until his retirement in 2019. Jon was deeply proud to serve the City of Lewiston, a place he called home for most of his life. He knew its streets like the back of his hand, along with many of the people who lived there.
Jon had a lifelong passion for Harley-Davidson motorcycles, owning four over the years. He was especially fond of his 1977 FLH, which remains in the family today. He loved the freedom of the open road and shared countless rides with friends and family. In his younger years, Jon served as Vice President of United Bikers of Maine, where he helped shape the organization and influence current motorcycle laws.
During the winter months, Jon enjoyed skiing and spent many joyful days on the slopes of Maine’s mountains with his family.
Jon is survived by his two brothers, Mark Elie and his wife Louise, and Dana Elie and his wife Jean; his four children, Scott T. Elie, Sarah J. Elie-Bennett, Isaac P. Elie, and Kendra E. Elie; and his grandchildren, Jaydon, Karah, Sofia, and Luke. He also leaves behind many dear friends, including his lifelong and exceptionally loyal friend, Paul “Duke” Dulac. He was predeceased by his sister Anne Labranche (Elie) and her husband Richard “Dick”, as well as many cherished friends who passed before him.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 27, 2025, from 9-10:30 a.m., at Albert & Burpee Funeral Home in Lewiston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., in the Upper Church of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.
