Today, June 26, is the 10th anniversary of marriage equality in the U.S. Despite all the threats to equal rights in our country right now, it is a milestone worth celebrating. How wonderful that this right was secured in June, during Pride Month. How proud Maine is of our own Mary Bonauto of Portland, a gifted attorney and tireless advocate at GLAD Law in Boston, who successfully argued the case for marriage equality before the U.S. Supreme Court to make it the law of the land.
And, how providential that June 26 also happens to be the date that Frannie Peabody died in 2001. She would be joining with the entire community to celebrate today’s milestone. She would also urge us all to remain vigilant to protect the rights of all LGBTQ+ people, as we live under an increasingly authoritarian regime that wants to erode them. May this milestone energize us — LGBTQ+ people and allies alike — to stand up and speak up for equal protection under the law. We will not go back.
