OTISFIELD — Residents in this Oxford County town will consider changing how they vote for town officials next year — by using a secret ballot instead of taking nominations from the floor — at Saturday’s annual town meeting.
The meeting will be held at the Otisfield Community Hall on Route 121 beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday’s warrant contains 26 articles.
Candidates this year will still be nominated from the floor. The article asking residents to vote by secret ballot for the select board and Maine School Administrative District 17 directors will go into effect next year if the article passes. Those candidates would be required to take out nomination papers and get signatures from residents to get their names on the ballot.
At this year’s meeting, Lenny Adler, who has served on the select board since 2008, is expected to seek another three-year term. Diana Olsen is likely running for reelection to the MSAD 17 board of directors.
Voters will consider a $2.6 million budget, which is a 4% increase over the current budget. The current fiscal year ends June 30.
The largest percentage increase is in debt and interest, which is up by 22% due to the $16,875 first payment due on the new fire truck purchased last year. Most of the other increases are less than 4%.
Residents will be asked to consider a waiver in the Solar Energy Ordinance that would allow a solar project on a 2-acre town-owned property on West Swampville Road. The waiver only applies to this one property.
