DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m writing to let people know about the Chris Branch Golf Tournament, to be played rain or shine at Toddy Brook Golf Course, 925 Sligo Road in North Yarmouth, on Aug. 4 at 8:30 a.m. with registration and breakfast at 7:30 a.m.
All proceeds go to scholarships for deserving Maine high school swimmers and divers. Chris Branch was Lewiston’s (and Portland’s) public works director, volunteered as a swim coach at the YMCA for years and served as a Maine swim official for over three decades.
For registration information, and sponsorship and donation opportunities, go to https://birdease.com/ChristopherBranch. The registration deadline for this 18-hole scramble is July 14.
Thanks for the help getting the word out! — Rick, no town
ANSWER: This tournament is in its third year and many of you will remember Chris, who gave so much time and energy to Maine’s competitive swimming community. His contributions to the sport are numerous. Here is a link to Chris’s obituary which describes how he lived his life: https://www.mesoa.org/christopher-branch-memorial-scholarship/who-was-christopher-branch/.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: We work with folks in the area who are moving and/or downsizing, cleaning out their living spaces, storage units and such. Many people don’t want to just have their usable items tossed into the landfill and we certainly don’t want that to happen either. We would much rather bring all items in good condition such as furniture, household goods, tools, clothing, etc., to local, established nonprofit organizations who either give the items away for free to those in need or can sell them to benefit their cause.
We are not in the business of selling things; we give them away to organizations so they can be redistributed.
We have started a list of organizations in L-A, western Maine and the Midcoast regions to contact. I have a truck and trailer and can transport items. There is no fee involved to donate things to nonprofits. We just want to help others and not just take perfectly good items to “the dump.” So, if you belong to or volunteer to an organization that helps others in this way, please email Karen at [email protected], tell us a bit about your nonprofit, what types of things you need and how to contact you. We will build a comprehensive list and get the word out. — Josh, no town
ANSWER: This is a much-needed service and I would love to hear from Sun Spotters who would like their organization, or one they know of, to be added to Josh’s list.
This list will show up in a future Sun Spots column to help our community members, both individuals, and those who assist with cleanouts, know where they can donate items — whether it be clothing and shoes from one closet to contents of an entire property. Let’s help one another with this project.
