PARIS — Wendy’s will be bringing its square hamburgers and Frostys to Oxford County.
The Planning Board on Wednesday approved the proposal to construct a new fast-food restaurant at 179 Main St. in the parking lot of Save A Lot grocery store.
This will be the 18th Wendy’s restaurant in the state and the only one in western Maine.
The 2,248-square-foot building will include a drive-thru, seating inside for 30 people and also have a few tables and chairs outside. The site will include 35 parking spaces.
The proposal was first brought before the Planning Board on June 11. A site walk was conducted earlier Wednesday, before the Planning Board revisited the proposal and approved the plan with a couple of minor contingencies. The board wanted clarification on the property line with the shopping center and more information on the sign. Neither issue seemed like a deal-breaker for the board.
Fire Chief Mark Blaquiere reviewed the plans and did not see any issues for his firetrucks to access the restaurant or the adjacent shopping plaza.
The owner of the shopping plaza told the board that he plans to pave and restripe the entrance for customers headed to the grocery store.
A crosswalk will be added crossing Route 26. It was recommended that a crossing light be added to make the area safer. It was unclear who would pay for the light but will likely be shared by Wendy’s and the shopping plaza owner.
The restaurant won’t be ready to open until 2027 at the earliest.
Wendy’s was started by Dave Thomas in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969 and was named for his daughter. According to 2023 sales figures, Wendy’s is the second largest hamburger chain in the U.S., trailing McDonalds and narrowly ahead of Burger King.
