I am writing in response to the coverage of the “No Kings” event on June 14. The event was promoting the American tradition that no one person is greater than our democracy, our rule of law and our Constitution.
Collaboration in Portland was fantastic, with three teams coming together: Indivisible Greater Portland, Indivisible Cumberland County and Indivisible Team Southern Maine, of which I am a member. We had a beautiful day with wonderful participation and support felt throughout the crowd. In a world so divided this felt like a safe, comfortable and respectful place.
My disappointment lies in your staff writers’ portrayal of the day. In a world so needing to hear the positives of collaboration and people coming together you chose to focus on the two persons arrested that day. There were about 4,500 attendees that day and you gave more focus to two people.
I guess you gave those two people the notoriety they were looking for instead of honoring the 4,498 who came together in peace. This certainly plays into news being all about the sensationalism. I expect more from you!
