During a recent microburst in Scarborough, a local driver had a terrifying experience when a CMP power line fell onto their car. Thankfully no one was hurt, but not everyone knows what to do in this situation.
Because car tires are generally not conductors of electricity, live wires can sit on the vehicle without hurting occupants. But if they try to step out, they risk being electrocuted. Here’s what to do: Stay inside the vehicle, unless there is fire or smoke; Call 9-1-1 and the utility company; warn others to stay away by honking or rolling down a window; don’t touch any metal part of the car; and don’t try to drive away.
If escape is necessary — due to fire or other emergency — it’s essential to never touch the car and the ground at the same time. First, open the door that is furthest away from the wire, without stepping out. Next, stand at the edge of the car door with feet together, arms crossed or at sides. Feet together, jump clear — then shuffle or hop with both feet together until you are at least 30 feet away.
Downed power lines can kill. Always treat them as live. Stay clear of anything touching the wire — water, fences, trees or people.
