RANGELEY — Voters passed a revised Police Department budget of $691,877 for 2025-26 during a special town meeting Monday evening.
Voters failed to pass a proposal at the annual town meeting in June. Selectmen recommended $705,944, while the Budget Committee recommended $702,218.
The open article on Monday’s warrant allowed voters to set a budget of their choosing.
During a meeting June 26, the Budget Committee recommended $602,218; selectmen recommended $691,877.
Town Manager Joe Roach said the revised selectmen’s recommendation reflected a reduction in overtime to cover sick time but 24-hour police coverage would remain.
“The proposal has a higher risk of running over next year,” he said.
In April, voters approved covering an overdraft for the 2024-25 fiscal year police budget. The components of that overdraft were attributed to union contract differences from year to year and overtime, he said.
The Budget Committee recommendation would result in a reduction of force and diminished police coverage, Roach said.
The meeting Monday opened with a motion to set the budget at $570,157, Roach said in an email Tuesday morning.
“During discussion, a motion was made to amend the amount to $691,877. That amendment passed 83 to 41,” he wrote.
After it was amended, the motion passed 88 to 36, he added.
“Now that we have accounted for all of the fiscal year 2025-26 budgeted expenditures, our assessor will meet for a workshop with the Board of Selectmen on July 21,” he said, to discuss the tax commitment and set the tax rate.
