Thank you for Tom Putnam’s July 7 op-ed on David Mallett (“Summer’s start stirs memories of Mallett“) as well as the Clay Hipp piece last December and all the other good words about Mallett following his death.
It’s a long time after the last week in June near the first quarter moon when the summer was coming down warm that I first heard him and the brilliant song that starts with those words. He remained a completely authentic smart and talented Mainer, probably somewhat changed by his success but always able to appreciate the sad and simple strains of the dulcimer — after being in New York, Nashville or anywhere else.
It is a pleasure to be reminded of his songs in these days of reading opinion pages or posts largely populated with the thoughts of so many unlike him.
