Our local legislators deserve a big thank you for supporting LD 814, the Older Mainers Act. This important legislation allows Agencies on Aging to address needs at the local level.
Championed by Rep. Kristin Cloutier, and supported by Sen. Peggy Rotundo among many others from our region, this funding will allow agencies to address older adult concerns by region. Maine is a diverse state with diverse needs depending on where people reside. In western Maine, we are faced with waiting lists for Meals on Wheels and caregiver support. Our phone lines ring constantly for assistance with a myriad of issues.
Twenty-six percent of Maine’s population is over the age of 65, a figure that is growing, and most of us will need help navigating the aging process and accessing services. Our local Agency on Aging, SeniorsPlus, is here to help with that process. Unfortunately, federal funding has not kept pace with the need. Kudos to our legislators for recognizing those unmet needs and providing funding for them.
I thank them for their leadership.
