A man who threatened to shoot another man doing yard work in Wilton on Friday, leading to a police standoff, is being treated at Maine Medical Center after two officers shot him.

Police received a 911 call Friday afternoon that Gabriele Wilbur, 34, was threatening to shoot another man who was doing landscaping on Cemetery Road.

Officers from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Wilton Police Department tried negotiating with Wilbur, according to a statement Saturday from Maine State Police, but Wilbur failed to follow their commands and pointed a gun at them.

A standoff ensued. Maine State Police called both their crisis negotiation and tactical response teams to the scene.

The standoff ended when Wilbur emerged from the house and tried confronting officers while armed, according to Maine State Police.

Trooper Andrew Hardy and officer Cody Henry shot Wilbur. His injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to police.

Hardy and Henry were placed on administrative leave while the Office of the Maine Attorney General investigates their actions, which is standard practice, according to Maine State Police.

The attorney general’s office has released findings for at least 14 instances of police shootings or deadly force that occurred last year.

State police say they’re still investigating Wilbur’s actions and expect to charge him with several criminal offenses.
