Cecelia Jenny Hoy
BETHEL – On July 4, 2025, at the age of 77, Cecelia Jenny Hoy of Bethel went home to be with her Lord and Savior. On that day she finally gained her independence from a broken body that would not allow her to work in her garden, go hiking in the woods, or put on a pair of snowshoes.
Born on Sept., 11, 1947, in Arlington, Va., Cecelia was the oldest of three siblings. With her parents Margaret and Harry B. Pope and a sister, Barbara and a brother, Harry, they lived in the Washington D.C. area throughout her young adult life. In 1972, she met Douglas Hoy and two years later they married. At that time, neither Doug nor Cecelia could have known they were embarking on a marriage that would last more than 50 years.
Cecelia proved to be a whiz at numbers in general and banking in
particular. A job she started in Virginia as a bank teller turned into a career when they moved to Maine in 1978 ending with her eventually holding an executive position in that industry. It was during this time that Cecelia developed a love for the mountains of Western Maine, especially when it came to skiing.
In 1992, Cecelia took a tragic fall down a staircase resulting in extensive injuries that would gradually become more disabling with the passing years. For her it became a time of deepening Faith even as that Faith was tested.
Cecelia is survived and greatly missed by her husband, Doug; sister, Barbara Laliberty, and her brother, Harry W. Pope; daughters Patty Hoy (by whom she was predeceased) and Krista Hoy; in addition to four grandchildren, Ashley Game and Kayla; Bruce McKenzie and Adian Zegouros; and four great-grandchildren, Zerrick Roy and Jayla Pelletier, and Andrick and Zeke Overturf.
Cecelia always strived to do things herself while never giving in to the ever mounting obstacles that threatened to overwhelm her. Rather than grow callous and bitter, she relied upon her God for strength, and it was His faithfulness that allowed her to radiate such a sweet spirit and tender heart.
On July Fourth, Cecelia once more tasted the Goodness of God and an eternal Freedom found only in Him.
Services will be held Monday July 28 at the Bethel Alliance Church, Walkers Mills Road at 11 a.m. Arrangements by Cliff Gray Cremation and Funeral Services, 60 Andrews Rd., Bryant Pond.
