Maine champion Bonny Eagle scored twice in the sixth inning to sent it to extra innings, then took the lead in the seventh, but couldn’t hang on and lost to Vermont champion Champlain, 4-3, in the New England Little League Softball Regional on Monday in Bristol, Connecticut.

Bonny Eagle falls to 1-1 in the tournament and will face New Hampshire in an elimination game at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The game can be streamed on ESPN+.

Trailing 2-0 in the sixth, Bonny Eagle took advantage of three errors to tie it, 2-2. Bonny Eagle took the lead in the top of the seventh when Adlie Poulin walked with the bases loaded.

Vermont tied it in the bottom of the seventh when ghost runner Ella Greer stole third and scored on an error, and won it an an RBI single by Lily Winegar.

Bonny Eagle loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fourth and no outs in the top of the fifth but couldn’t score.

Pitcher Jasmine Peters didn’t allow a base runner until Ellis Montgomery doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Montgomery advanced to third on a wild pitched and scored on a ground out to give Vermont a 1-0 lead. Vermont added a run later in the inning to make it 2-0.

Peters, who struck out 11 of the first 12 batters she faced, struck out 18 in 7 2/3 innings.
