DENMARK — The following are the events coming to the Denmark Arts Center in the next three weeks.
• Al Hospers Birthday Band
Friday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m.: We are so delighted to welcome Al Hospers Birthday Band, a six-piece group playing in the New England area. They play an eclectic mix of cover tunes, unique arrangements of instantly recognizable favorites, as well as original songs that audiences have come to enjoy. The band features bandleader Al Hospers on bass and vocals, Mike Sakash on saxophones, Jarrod Taylor on guitar, Tom Robinson on keyboards, and Craig Bryan Jr. on drums.
Tickets for these events are $15, supporting the Music Series and Denmark Arts Center. For reservations and more information, go online at denmarkarts.org/calendar-of-events (view calendar listing). Thank you to the Onion Foundation for supporting our Music Series.
• Palaver Strings Quartet
Saturday, Aug. 2, at 7 p.m.: This program explores multiple outlooks on life and chamber music. Described as a “fervent, celebratory investigation into joy itself,” Paul Wiancko’s Lift explodes with adventurous textures that span the full sonic range of the string quartet. The program continues with two short contemplative pieces by Ólafur Arnalds, and concludes with Franz Peter Schubert’s epic “Death and the Maiden,” a passionate dance with death that was only published after Schubert’s own death in 1828.
Paul Wianko, “Lift” (25′)
Ólafur Arnalds, “Momentary + Saman” (6′)
Franz Schubert, “Death and the Maiden” (41′)

• Author Series: Lewis Robinson with “The Islanders”
Sunday, Aug. 3, at 5 p.m.: Shaken by problems at home, confused by the motives of a new love, and reeling from a public meltdown, high school hockey star Walt McNamara joins an exclusive new leadership program controlled by the ultra-wealthy summer residents of Whaleback Island, a granite and spruce oasis off the coast of Maine. But this is no paradise; secrets lurk in its murky waters.
This Author Series was created by a collaboration with Denmark Public Library, Historical Society, Arts Center, and supported by a community angel — so much gratitude, thank you!
Tickets for these events are pay-what-you-can with a suggestion of $10 to support the Author Series and Denmark Arts Center. • Hildaland
Saturday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m.: Orkney, Scotland-born fiddler Louise Bichan and Indiana, USA, mandolinist Ethan Setiawan present a collaboration and meeting of their musical worlds. A path steeped in the fiddle traditions of their respective sides of the Atlantic, the journey taken wends through Scottish, old-time, and Swedish-inspired music intertwined with contemporary compositions. Bichan’s fiddle is a melodic foil to Setiawan’s counterpoint and harmonic depth, and the two weave in and out seamlessly.
