The article written regarding the low level of water on Tripp Lake had a truthful headline (“Humans, not beavers, to blame for dam at Tripp Pond in Poland,” Sun Journal, July 20). Humans are responsible for actions resulting in harmful conditions on Tripp Lake.
Humans destroyed the dam and killed the beavers that have been controlling water levels on the lake for over a century. Humans removed the tape measure and stick put in place by the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and the Department of Environmental Protection, so we no longer have a gauge on how low the water has retreated. Humans have removed any indicators of the presence of beavers.
Residents now have difficulty in pulling water out of the lake for non-potable uses, boats are lying on the sandy bottom at the end of docks. However, many of us have beaches. As a sign on one lakefront house announces: “BEACHES KILL LAKES.”
Reporters would be prudent to speak to the Tripp Lake Improvement Association before presenting further observations.
