Immigrants, and those mistaken for them, live under daily threat of ICE enforcement that disrupts families and communities. And these are people who are essential to Maine’s economy, from food processing and elder care to farm work and restaurant service.
Thankfully, Maine offers strong support. The Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project provides legal help and “know your rights” training. The Maine Solidarity Fund offers bond support and legal referrals. Programs like the New Mainers Resource Center guide employers in protecting workers.
All workplaces can post “know your rights” materials, designate trained staff to respond if ICE appears and create a rapid response plan with legal contacts.
ICE brings fear. We can respond with preparation and solidarity. Maine is strongest when all our people live and work in safety. When danger shows up, we can lead with knowledge, solidarity and protection. Dirigo!
