LEWISTON — Central Maine Healthcare announced to staff Thursday that it will lay off employees, possibly as many as 100, according to a source within the hospital system.

It is unclear exactly how many employees will be laid off. CMHC officials declined to comment on the announcement Thursday, stating that it will speak publicly Friday.

Central Maine Healthcare is a hospital system located in central Maine that operates Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Bridgton Hospital in Bridgton and Rumford Hospital in Rumford.

Officials with the hospital system did not mention a particular reason for the layoffs, said the source, who did not want to be identified because they were not authorized to speak about the layoffs.

However, CMHC has been grappling with recent Medicaid challenges at the state and federal levels.

The hospital network also experienced a cyber incident last month that shut down its computer systems for several weeks. The shutdown is the subject of several class action lawsuits against the company in Androscoggin Superior Court.

CMHC is gearing up to be acquired by Prime Healthcare Foundation, a California-based nonprofit organization that operates multiple hospital systems in several states.

In early 2024, CMHC cut 45 positions, allowing staff to accept different positions within the health care system or accept a severance package. Those cuts were billed as a reorganization of management and administrative positions to help support growth and community needs.
