As a volunteer election clerk in New Gloucester, I have seen how vulnerable our election system can be without simple protections like requiring voters to present an ID. When someone walks in and gives a name and address, we take them at their word.
Last November, a man walked in to vote and gave me a name and address. Before I could check him off the list, he confessed that he had given me his brother’s name and address as a test. He told me that he and his brother don’t agree on politics, so he wanted to see how easy it would be to cast his brother’s vote. Without voter ID, our system is open to abuse.
When I lived in Ohio, I had to show an ID to vote. It was no big deal. Maine should join the 36 other states that already require voter ID.
On Nov. 4, please join me and vote “Yes” on voter ID to safeguard Maine’s elections.
