The 20th annual Oquossoc Day Festival will bring the Fabulous ’50s to Rangeley’s Oquossoc Village with events Friday, Aug. 15, through Sunday, Aug. 17.
The event began in 2005, the year of Rangeley’s sesquicentennial celebration. A group from Oquossoc decided the celebration should include the village and not just the town of Rangeley.
Before she died in 2013, JoAnne Koob, one of the original organizing committee members, made her daughter, Janet Koob, promise to keep the festival going.
The festival is organized by Janet, Eliza Morton, Chris Wargo, and original committee member Linda Sikes.
Koob said the festival is a family event, with activities for all ages.
“Oquossoc Day is privately funded and we have some anonymous donors,” she said. “We don’t ask for donations from Rangeley businesses. It is just Oquossoc merchants coming together for a fun day celebrating our community.”
A raffle also helps defray the costs associated with the event. Tickets can be purchased throughout the day Saturday at the Oquossoc Day headquarters tents in the park and at the marina. Prizes are a guided fishing trip for four, a framed area map and an Oquossoc business gift basket. Winning tickets will be drawn at 5 p.m. at Portage Tap House. Ticketholders need not be present to win.
The official kickoff or retro ’50s fun begins Friday from 5-7 p.m. at Bald Mountain Camps. A full cash bar and bar food menu are available, along with food discounts. Dining room seating and the camp’s famous lobster cookout are open to all but require advance reservations by calling (207) 864-3671.
Saturday will be packed with vintage fun, family activities and much more. The day’s events start with a community pancake breakfast from 9-11 a.m. in Oquossoc Park. The breakfast is a new addition to this year’s schedule. There is no charge but donations are greatly appreciated.
Classic games and activities for kids of all ages start at 10 a.m. at the Oquossoc Fire Station.
Art and Antiques Show vendors will be set up on the Outdoor Heritage Museum lawn from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Here you will find vintage collectibles, rustic Maine décor, and fine arts and crafts. To inquire about vendor space, contact Historic Rangeley at [email protected].
Indian Point at 8 Carry Road will host a local artists pop-up exhibit from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The exhibit features new original works from Sonja Johnson, Heidi Sorensen, Pamela Ellis and David Wegman. The artists will be on-site, painting and exhibiting their works. An artist reception will follow, starting at 4 p.m. The exhibit will continue Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cruise on in to the Oquossoc Marine for the Chrome and Curves Car Show from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is a celebration of classic rides, wild customs and offbeat gems. Show off your wheels or soak in the chrome and creativity; there’s something for everyone. Food and beverages will be available, courtesy of Oquossoc Marine. Trophies will be awarded at 1 p.m. for Best in Show, Most Unique Ride and People’s Choice. To register a vehicle for the show, e-mail [email protected].
Dress your dog as your favorite 1950s icon for the community dog show in the back lot of Oquossoc Grocery at 11 a.m. No preregistration needed. Prizes will be awarded. All dogs must be on a leash at all times.
A midday street dance party, featuring The Tom Ball Band, will take place in Oquossoc Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A scrimmage format cornhole tournament will be held on the lawn at Oquossoc Cove Marina beginning at 11 a.m. All ages are welcome; first come, first served. Prizes awarded.

The popular decorated boat parade launches at 1:30 p.m. Boats will line up in front of Indian Point by 1:15 p.m. and parade in front of the Oquossoc Cove Marina. Spectators are welcome and encouraged to watch from the shore. Trophies will be awarded; no preregistration needed.
Stick around after the parade for a not-to-be-missed performance by the Maine Attraction Water Ski Show Team. With a splash of 1950s flair, they will wow the crowd with daring stunts, high-flying tricks, human pyramids, and retro moves straight out the the rock ‘n’ roll era. Spectators are welcome to drop anchor just beyond the marina’s “slow wake zone” or bring a lawn chair and grab a spot on shore.
Wrapping up the day is a happy hour after-party at Portage Tap House starting at 3:30 p.m. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
