DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Edward Little High School class of 1980 is having their 45th class reunion at the AMVET Post 6, 1095 Lewiston Road, in New Gloucester, on Saturday, Aug. 16.
A few tickets are still available and we want to let classmates know they still have a few days to join in and connect. Please contact Candy at [email protected] or Venmo ckbenoit — last digits 9229 — to purchase your ticket. The cost is $30 per person. — Laurie, no town
ANSWER: If you’re a member of this class, I urge you not to miss out. For those attending, I’d love to hear how it goes.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Poland Historical Society will be presenting a history of “Maine’s Corn Canning Industry” at the Poland Historical Society Schoolhouse Museum located at 1231 Maine St. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 6:30 p.m.
At one time, Maine had 111 vegetable canneries. The Fernald, Keene, and True Company of West Poland was one of several corn canning factories in our area. Established in 1888, it provided a source of income for local farmers who raised sweet corn and for the workers who transformed “cobs to kernels” at the cannery.
Local historian, Jason Libby, PhD., will be the speaker and refreshments will be served. All are welcome. For further information, call 998-5268. — David, Auburn
ANSWER: I didn’t know that so many canneries were once part of the Maine way of living back then. I’ve learned so much from Sun Spotters! And the Poland Historical Society does such a wonderful job with their programming. We’re truly fortunate to have this organization in the community.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am writing to those local residents who were fortunate to have known the late Peggy St. Laurent some 35 years ago. She was a kind, creative, big-hearted person who loved making Christmas decorations, sharing them with friends, and selling them at Christmas fairs. She especially enjoyed making Christmas crèches out of twigs and branches.
For those of you reading this letter who knew Peggy well, you were probably on the receiving end of her Christmas spirit and generosity. If you were fortunate to have received a crèche from her or bought one at a fair, I would appreciate hearing from you at [email protected]. I would like to know what materials she used and what steps were taken to create it. — David, Auburn
ANSWER: I remember that you had a crèche that was damaged while stored in a closet. Please let us know when you find someone to help you. If you have any photos of this work of art, that could be helpful too.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have a collection of 57 Hallmark DVDs that I would like to give to someone who would appreciate them. They belonged to a beloved family member who recently passed. Please contact me at [email protected] . — No name, Minot
ANSWER: I have a feeling these will get snatched right up. I know someone who may be interested as well so I’m forwarding this message to her. If for some crazy reason you have no takers, contact your library or perhaps the public libraries in Auburn and Lewiston. If these DVDs are in great condition, they may want them to share with their patrons.
