After more than 30 years in law enforcement in the city, Lewiston police Chief David St. Pierre announced Aug. 7 that he will retire in early September.
The decision has led to speculation on who could — and should — replace him as the city continues to grapple with complex issues like gun violence, drug trafficking, substance use and homelessness.
On Tuesday, City Administrator Bryan Kaenrath, who will ultimately make the hiring decision, said he plans to share his hiring process and timeline within the next week, and that it will include “components for public input and participation.”
So, readers, what would you like to see in the next Lewiston police chief? Should the city hire from within the police department ranks, or look outside for a new chief? What kind of person should be at the helm? What should be their top priorities?
