With all due respect to the author of a recent letter written in support of the voter ID citizens’ initiative (“Automatic absentee ballots are risky,” Aug. 4), perhaps a trip to the town hall to cancel the automatic ballot should be added to the endless list of things that we of a certain age need to do to close out the administrative lives of our parents.
Having been through the process four times, myself, I have no interest in adding to that list, but the writer is absolutely right that we cannot have unused, unneeded ballots floating around. I must confess that I continue to await word of a significant problem of voter fraud for these measures to cure. Rather I think these measures are more likely to inhibit some people’s exercise of the franchise.
