This year marks the 90th anniversary of Social Security — a cornerstone of economic security for generations of Americans. At AARP, we recognize this milestone not just as a celebration of the past, but as a call to protect and strengthen the program for the future.
In Maine, where we have one of the oldest populations in the country, Social Security is a lifeline for over 300,000 residents. But its impact goes far beyond retirees. Social Security provides critical support to people of all ages through disability and survivorship benefits. For families who lose a breadwinner, these benefits can mean the difference between stability and hardship.
Social Security is not a handout — it’s a promise. Workers earn these benefits through a lifetime of contributions. And in a state like ours, where many work in physically demanding jobs, Social Security offers peace of mind that help will be there if injury or illness strikes.
As we honor 90 years of this vital program, AARP urges policymakers to commit to its long-term solvency. Mainers — and all Americans — deserve the security of knowing Social Security will be there for them and their families, today and tomorrow.
Let’s celebrate this anniversary by reaffirming our commitment to a program that reflects our shared values of dignity, fairness and intergenerational support.
