Share your fish stories at Chesterville Meeting House

CHESTERVILLE — The Chesterville Center Union Meeting House will present “Fishing Stories” on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m., hosted by renowned mask maker and storyteller Michael Cooper.

Audience members young and old will be invited to participate in the open-mic format. “A bad day of fishing beats a good day at work!” “It was this big!” “I’m not fishing. I’m teaching my worm to swim!” Everyone’s got a fishing story, according to organizers of the event, who are encouraging people to tell their favorite story or just sit back and enjoy a storytelling evening at the meetinghouse.

The Chesterville Center Union Meeting House is a nonprofit community resource at 3 Borough Road. Light refreshments will be provided. Donations to support the Meeting House are appreciated. Call 779-0660 or go to chestervillemeetinghouse.org for more information.

Paint your own story at the library

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Public Library will host a watercolor painting class on Thursday, Aug. 21, in the second-floor Idea Lab from 5-7 p.m. The class is free and all art supplies will be provided. Whether you’re a first-time painter or an advanced artist, adults of all ages are encouraged to attend the guided painting class. GREENE — Portland native Don Campbell, a national grand prize winner of Nashville’s True Value Showdown at the Grand Ole Opry and recent inductee to the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame, will appear with his band for two shows at the Araxine Wilkins Sawyer Memorial on Friday, Aug. 22.

Don and his band will perform a mix of American crossover music, including classic covers by some of his favorite artists, along with his most requested original songs. The shows are set for 2 and 7 p.m.

Celebrate Vice President Hannibal Hamlin in Paris

PARIS — The annual celebration of former Vice President Hannibal Hamlin’s birthday will take place on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with what organizers are calling “great music, entertainment and discovery.”

All happening on Paris Hill Common, 500 Paris Hill Road, the event honors the former U.S. vice president from Paris with live music, historical exhibits, contests and games, hands-on activities, food and special guests. And not to be missed, the Maine State Cake Decorating Championship.

And if that wasn’t enough, on the night before the celebration, Barefoot Man will perform Friday, Aug. 22, from 5-9 p.m. at Paris Hill Common.

The international recording artist will perform his No. 1 singles and other island favorites, joined by Chuck and Barrie Quappe, of Belfast. A cash bar will be available, and organizers encourage concertgoers to “get yourself a flowery shirt, a pair of shorts and flip flops and plan to be on Paris Hill for a night with The Barefoot Man.”

Kayak in search of beavers

BETHEL — The Mahoosuc Land Trust will take paddlers on a “Beavers of the Androscoggin Kayak Tour” on Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All proceeds of the benefit paddle, led by Bethel Adventure Tours, will go to the land trust.

According to organizers, “This is intended to be a slow paddle with significant exploration off the main channel, including some dismounts to explore tracks, plants and of course beaver stuff. Bring lunch and a swimsuit as well. Even if you have paddled the Androscoggin River, we guarantee you haven’t explored it like this paddle. This is our 5th year guiding nature discovery tours on the Androscoggin River. We don’t float … we explore.”

Don’t get caught between the dueling pianos

LEWISTON — The Dueling Pianos are set to joust keys at the Franco Center on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 8 p.m., providing listeners with a high-energy, interactive night of music.

With seating in the round, the pianists will perform on the floor in the center of Heritage Hall, surrounded by the audience. Listeners will be up close and part of the action, singing along, making requests and enjoying the duel. According to organizers, “Two pianos. Countless songs. Unlimited fun. From pop and rock to country and classics, these two masterful musicians will play it all — based on your requests.”

Doors open at 7 p.m. with concessions and a full cash bar available all evening. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door.

The four-day Blistered Fingers Family Bluegrass Music Festival begins Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Litchfield Fairgrounds.

The annual festival brings together thousands of music lovers from all over the world to hear bluegrass played by national and Maine bands.
