NORWAY — Visitors to Norway Memorial Library can enjoy an art exhibit in the reference room. Items of Refuse features fourteen works of encaustic mixed media by Heather Newton Brown.

The art exhibit explores the tension between discarded and degraded items and the performance of beauty. It is a commentary on capitalism, societal norms, and the potential of human creativity and resilience. As a creative, Heather uses her craft to navigate and process her responses to the ever-changing landscape of life. Worn and found objects fascinate her as they embody the journey of loss, rediscovery, and transformation.

Heather is a mixed media encaustic artist residing in Casco, Maine on unceded Wabanaki territory. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Goddard College and a Master’s Degree in Counseling from Union Institute and University. Beyond her artistic endeavors, she is a psychotherapist. During her leisure time, she enjoys her friends and pets, volunteers, immerses herself in nature, and scours scrap metal to incorporate into her next body of work.

This display is on view whenever the library is open through September. Norway Memorial Library is located at 258 Main Street in Norway, Maine. For more information, visit www.norwaymemoriallibrary.org or call 207-743-5309.
