I’m writing in response to Don Kelly’s letter in the Aug. 1 edition of this paper (“Voter ID will keep Maine elections secure“). Mr. Kelly seems to believe that unless voters provide voter identification at the time of voting, many unregistered voters will cast ballots. This is simply not true.
Only registered voters are allowed to vote in Maine, and all prospective voters at the time they register everyone must provide a voter ID, a passport or some other proof of residency.
Requiring people to bring an ID when they vote is unnecessarily burdensome, and will only further restrict voter access.
