DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Lewiston Public Library will be holding its first Literary Ball on Saturday, Oct. 18. The ball commemorates Jane Austen’s 250th birthday and the theme will be the Regency era.
In preparation for the ball, the library is in the process of sourcing china teacups and lace tablecloths. If anyone has such items that they would like to donate, they would be greatly appreciated. For more information, please contact Sarah Bennett at [email protected]. — Sarah, Lewiston
ANSWER: Now this is something I can get behind and look forward to! I’ll be contacting Sarah right away to talk to her about what I can donate. How about yourselves?
Meanwhile, let’s read some books by Miss Austen or at the very least watch the movies based on some of these classics to get us in the mood for the big day. Here are some titles, including some of her lesser-known unfinished early works complete with spelling errors! Love and Friendship, The Beautifull Cassandra, Lesley Castle, Lady Susan, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Persuasion, Northanger Abbey, The Watsons, Sanditon.
If you’re a Jane Austen fan, what’s your favorite?
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Sometime last spring there was an announcement of an organization that helps low-income homeowners with repairs. I contacted them and subsequently a man representing them came by and checked my needed repair (replacing several roof shingles).
I have not heard anything from them since and would like to contact them but cannot remember the name of the organization. I think it had the words “restore” or “repair ” in the name and maybe either “Lewiston” or “Androscoggin.” Can you help me find an address or phone number for them please? — Eileen, no town
ANSWER: I believe you’re referring to Rebuilding Together https://rebuildingtogetherla.org/, 333-7449. This nonprofit is dedicated to repairing the homes of those who, due to financial hardship, age, and/or disability, cannot do the work themselves. Skilled and unskilled volunteers along with able-bodied members of the recipient’s family and friends complete the repairs at no cost to the homeowner.
They send out information each spring searching for applicants and volunteers and use Sun Spots to help spread the word. I have left them a message on the organization’s voice mail and you can feel free to contact them and leave a message as well. It sounds like something happened with the communication between you both and hopefully, you can get to the bottom of it. Let me know what happens.
