I want to thank Sen. Susan Collins for her leadership during recent debates over cancelling international assistance funding. Sen. Collins demonstrated real leadership by holding substantive hearings on international assistance funding, consistently voting against harmful cuts, and providing a platform for bipartisan voices to defend programs like the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), global food security initiatives and humanitarian assistance. She understands that these programs aren’t just moral imperatives — they’re strategic investments in American security and influence that also support Maine’s economy.

With $3.4 billion in exports worldwide, and over 170,000 jobs tied to international trade, Maine benefits when we help build stable, prosperous partners around the globe. I am deeply grateful for Sen. Collins’ willingness, as well as the willingness of her staff, to meet with and assist members of the Cambodian and Asian American communities. Many of these individuals have family, friends and loved ones in areas where U.S. international assistance has a significant impact.

As we face potential future attacks on international assistance, I’m grateful Maine has a senator who understands that true strength comes from leading with both power and compassion.
