Maine travelers should expect this Labor Day weekend to be busier than years prior, officials say.

The Maine Turnpike Authority and Portland International Jetport are each expecting this year’s traffic to slightly outpace last year.

The MTA expects a 1.5% increase in traffic compared with last Labor Day weekend, when highway tolls recorded over 1.1 million transactions on the 109-mile highway between that Friday and holiday Monday.

On the Turnpike, Friday will likely be the busiest of the four days, with northbound traffic expected to peak from 2-7 p.m. Saturday’s heaviest volumes are projected to be between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in both directions, and Monday’s southbound traffic is anticipated to peak between noon and 7 p.m.

Construction maintenance activities are suspended during the long weekend, but drivers should still obey construction zone speed limits, the authority said.

“In recent years, both the Thursday before and Tuesday after Labor Day have seen increased traffic as visitors choose to extend their stays longer in Vacationland,” the authority said in a statement.

Jetport officials forecast a similar increase in the number of travelers over the holiday weekend.

“Given the trend this summer with April, May, June and July all hitting records my expectation is that August will also be a record, but up a more modest 2%,” airport Director Paul Bradbury said in an email Friday.

Despite the expected increase in travelers, Bradbury said the airport will have 4.7% less outbound capacity than Labor Day weekend last year: 23,637 total airplane seats. But Bradbury said that “does not necessarily mean we will see fewer travelers.”
