After a boat capsized on Hermon Pond recently, a man and a child were successfully rescued by first responders. Fortunately, both were wearing life jackets, which made all the difference.

Whether we’re on a large lake or a quiet pond, accidents can happen in an instant. Wearing a life jacket is one of the simplest, most effective ways to stay safe on any body of water. Not every water emergency ends this well. Life jackets save lives. Don’t take the risk.

According to U.S. Coast Guard boating statistics, three out of every four boaters who die in a boating accident drowned and of those deaths, 87% were not wearing a life jacket; many were considered strong swimmers. People wouldn’t try to put on a seat belt during a car crash, and they can’t put on a life jacket in the middle of a boating emergency.

Wearing a life jacket on the water is critical, so before heading out, make sure everyone on board has one that fits properly. Need to borrow a life jacket? Check for availability at a local Sea Tow Foundation Life Jacket Loaner Station at https://www.boatingsafety.com/page/stationlocations/. It could save a life.
