The title of Referendum Question 1, “Voter ID,” is misleading. It is much more than that. The biggest injustice is the restrictions on absentee ballots, especially “prohibit requests for absentee ballots by phone or by family members.” How else can a homebound person get an absentee ballot?
In November 2020, I watched a dear friend enter the voting hall, supported by family members. She was 95 and passed away one week later. That is determination, but not all seniors are as “stubborn” as Betty. My husband was bed-bound for his last election but still wanted to vote. Under this new proposal, he would have been denied that right.
What are the reasons for these restrictions? They say it’s to improve election integrity. Maine elections are already safe and secure. Seniors and disabled citizens are restricted enough. Please don’t take away their ability to participate in their constitutional right to vote.
