DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Poland Historical Society will hold a presentation on the early town schools Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 6:30 p.m. at 1229 Maine St. next to the Poland Town Office. This talk will cover a period of about 150 years, starting with the early settlers to the end of the one-room schoolhouses in Poland.

The presentation, given by Rose Hemond Aikman, will include a slide show and class pictures, as well as a discussion regarding how schools and teaching have changed over the years. This event is free and the public is invited. — David, Auburn

ANSWER: This sounds so interesting. Can you imagine what it must have been like to go to school in those days, especially compared to now? I don’t know about you, but turning back the clock, even for an evening, sounds awfully appealing in many ways.

I’m impressed and my heart is warmed by the fact that there are folks in our readership keeping history alive and sharing their knowledge with others.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: This is a friendly reminder that the Share Center is open. Our regular business hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2-5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

We are now at the Market Place Mall at 675 Main St. in Lewiston next to Fueled by Nutrition. The sign above the center still says JFM. New signs will be coming soon once we finalize things with our local business sponsor.

ANSWER: I know many schools and educators who participate in the SHAREcenter’s mission of rescuing reusable resources and in doing so, find so many usable items. I’m sure you’re aware that teachers and others involved in education are often left scrounging for supplies and not all families can afford the cost of what is required for students to bring to the classroom. If you want to know more about the SHAREcenter, go to the website listed above or to the Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=sharecenter.
