Several fire and police departments responded to a call for a plane crash Thursday afternoon near Eastern Slope Regional Airport at 210 Lyman Drive in Fryeburg, according to early reports.
The pilot of the single-engine plane died in the crash, according to a Fryeburg police press release. The identity of the pilot, the lone occupant of the craft, was not released.
According to online flight records, the plane had been coming in from Aroostook County and was set to land in Fryeburg close to 3 p.m.
Instead, the plane was reported to have crashed a short distance from the airport. Freyburg police, fire and rescue crews were able to find the crashed plane a short time later.
“The single-engine plane was found in a wooded area,” according to the release. “Emergency responders, including ground crews and search teams, took part in the operation.”
Porter Road was closed to traffic as emergency crews from multiple towns headed to the scene.
Scott Pratt, supervisor aviation safety inspector for Federal Aviation Administration said his agency is aware of a crash.
“We’ll have more information when fire crews can provide a tail number,” Pratt said. “Then we’ll begin our investigation.”
Later Thursday night, it was reported that the National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation into the cause of the crash.
Local authorities are assisting federal agencies as requested.
This is a developing story.
