Chris Lang accounted for nearly 400 yards passing and running and threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to John Germano in overtime, and the University of New England rallied for a 56-49 win over Coast Guard in an NCAA Division III football season opener Saturday in Biddeford.
Lang rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown, and passed for 285 yards. His 8-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Anderson with 4:25 left in regulation tied the game at 49-49.
UNE then got the ball first in overtime and quickly converted. The Nor’easters clinched their victory when Jeremy Teighan intercepted a fourth-down pass by Coast Guard’s Sean Burns.
The teams combined for 1,364 yards from scrimmage. Coast Guard’s Harrison Hensley rushed for 304 yards and four touchdowns, and Burns passed for 332 yards. Damien Jones finished with 228 yards and three TDs on 33 carries for the Nor’easters, who lost to Coast Guard in overtime in their 2024 season opener.
The game was delayed for nearly an hour in the fourth quarter because of lightning and ended in a downpour.
HUSSON 40, FRAMINGHAM STATE 13: Max Clark passed for 323 yards and three touchdowns, and Jed Lober rushed for 111 yards and three TDs as the Eagles won their season opener in Framingham, Massachusetts.
Clark, a senior from Bangor, completed 22 of 26 passes, including scoring strikes of 6 yards to Caden Crocker, 27 yards to Imari Montgomery and 19 yards to Cam Holmes.
Montgomery caught six passes for 110 yards.
HARTWICK 56, MAINE MARITIME 7: Auston Harris scored the lone touchdown for Maine Maritime as the Mariners lost in their return to full-time varsity status, at Oneonta, New York.
Harris rushed for 102 yards on 19 carries, with a 30-yard TD run in the second quarter.
