BRUNSWICK — Edward Little continued its undefeated start to the volleyball season by beating Brunswick 3-0 on Thursday evening.
The Red Eddies (3-0) won by scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-2. Brunswick falls to 0-3.
Edward Little was led by Elizabeth Galway, Maija Bolduc and Sarah Ebersole at the serve line. In the third set, Bolduc had a 12-point serving streak and Galway had an eight-point streak.
“All of my players are strong servers, but (Ebersole, Bolduc and Galway) tend to get us going a little bit, especially with being able to serve two spots,” second-year Red Eddies coach Kristi Gordon said.
Bolduc, a setter, said “focusing, not listening to anything and staying in the same spot,” helps her at the serving line.
The Red Eddies were also strong at the net, led by junior Nellie Feeney, who made several blocks and some huge hits during three long rallies.
Brunswick remained close early in the first two sets, but Edward Little was able to pull away.
“I think we were focused and ready to go in the beginning, and after losing that (first) set, the morale was hard to continue to focus on and build throughout,” said first-year Brunswick coach Anna Dorrance said. “And then (it was) sort of a tough second set, tough third set there to end like that, too.”
The Dragons are not in a co-op for the first time this season after nine years with Mt. Ararat. Dorrance said the team is young this year, and the early focus in practice has been on serving, serve receiving and covering the hitters.
“They did a good job of transitioning on and off the net and trying to figure out, ‘this is where I’m supposed to move and where I’m supposed to go,’ so I’ve definitely seen a lot of progress there,” Dorrance said. “We had some good offensive plays, too.”
Gordon said the Eddies’ athleticism and depth are key to their unbeaten start. Bolduc said the team also has developed on-court chemistry.
“We are all really close, and we all talk very well, there’s no fighting, there’s no drama, we’re all really good,” Bolduc said. “It’s feeling good starting off really strong.”
Dorrance said Brunswick can learn a lot from Thursday’s loss.
“My girls have the skills to play well and to beat any team I’ve seen so far, but it’s staying in the game and being able to execute what we can do in the moment,” Dorrance said. “More practice, more time, more hits and we’ll figure it out.”
