Gerald Ernest Mayo

RUMFORD – Gerald Ernest Mayo, 92, of Rumford, passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2025. Gerald was born in Rumford on Oct. 1, 1932, and was the son of Ephraim and Beatrice Therrien. He was one of six children.

Gerald was a graduate of Stephens High School, class of 1951. He went into The USAF the right after graduation and went overseas. He served in the Korean Conflict and was discharged in 1953.

He then went to work at the Oxford Paper Company where he worked as a machinist, retiring in 1995. He was a Union Shop Steward and was a member of the local American Legion. He was a communicant of Holy Savior Catholic Church, Rumford.

Gerald was a boy scout leader. He loved woodworking, making intricate detailed replicas of vehicles. He was also very talented with stained glass. He loved the outdoors and sports of all kinds. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, although in later years he gave up hunting and said he would rather see the animals alive and moving instead of on a tailgate or a fender.

He is survived by four sons and one daughter, Stephen Mayo and wife Bridgette of Center Conway, NH, Catherine Jarosz and husband John of Leicester, NC, Daniel Mayo and wife Tammy of Byron, Maine, Robert Mayo of Rumford, Joseph Mayo of South Carolina, and sister Shirley Locke and her husband Gerald; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one great great grandchild.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers Alyre, Linwood, Fred and Ted.

A graveside service will be held on Friday Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. in St. John’s Cemetery, Rumford, Maine. Arrangements are by Thibault Remembrance Center 250 Penobscot St., Rumford.
